Erectile dysfunction, also known as ED occurs when a man is not able to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough to complete sexual intercourse. Another term for ED is impotence. This is a chronic disease that is brought on by age or injury, and can last for years or even a lifetime. ED is the most common sexual performance problem men report to their doctors. There are as many as 30 million cases in the US per year, ranging from mild to severe symptoms, most of them being middle aged to older men.
Why does this happen? As men age the vessels in the penis decline in function, degrade and accumulate micro-plaque just as they do elsewhere in the body. This is called vasculogenic ED. The sensitivity of the penis also declines, making a gratifying orgasm harder to achieve. Men tend to report needing a longer recovery time between acts of sexual stimulation. The underlying cause of vasculogenic ED is a reduction in the amount of blood flow to the penis during sexual performance. Other causes of ED include the drop in testosterone levels that naturally occur as men age and Peyronie’s Disease – a condition caused by scar tissue inside the penis often resulting in an abnormal curvature and erectile pain.
At Florida Medical Group, we evaluate each patient to determine the cause of their symptoms and find non-invasive medical solutions to meet their unique needs.
